Constructing My Combo

Hello, everyone! It has been a while since we’ve put out a newsletter, but we are definitely back! Ladies Night! took a small break after the second season of our tournament series, but I’m looking forward to getting back into the groove of all things Ladies Night! A break was definitely needed, because now that I’m revived, I’m ready to go!

There have been an influx of new women that have entered the scene since the pandemic, and I wanted to highlight them outside of the excel sheet I made for the ladies in the FGC fill out:

So, I thought after taking a small hiatus, bringing back the newsletters was a great way to highlight many of the ladies within the FGC. This will help people get to know them better outside of the excel spreadsheet, and highlight their accomplishments in the scene.

So let’s begin…:

Rose Rollie Mollitor a.k.a. Gay Z holds many hats within’ the FGC, but that hasn’t stopped her from excelling with each role. The twenty-six year old has been active within the FGC for five years, mainly within the Tekken community. Rose got her start back in 2017, when she and her roommate (who is also her best friend and co-owner of her team) at the time were excited about Tekken 7 due to playing the legacy game when they were younger. She states, “We would play everyday after work for hours.”

After her roommate heard that there was a local tournament, they decided to try it out, which Rose says, “We went and I fell in love.” She continues, “We had so much fun we also randomly heard of this event people were talking about called Combo Breaker. So us knowing nothing much about the game, we were like, ‘Let’s just go and see what this is all about.’” Ever since, she states she and her roommate have been going every year. Rose also states that Combo Breaker is one of her biggest inspirations for being within the FGC, aside from the Detroit FGC and ‘Tim’.

Gay-Z has had quite a few achievements, but her biggest ones she states, “…have been playing Top 16 at NEC, commentating Summer Jam back to back years, a European online Tekken league (2BCU), and a bunch of regionals all over the country.” Don’t worry, she’s not done yet.

Her future goals aren’t player based, but more commentary based. She states, “My future goals in the FGC are to commentate one of the big 3 majors (CEO, Combo Breaker and, or Evo), commentate an event overseas, top 16 a major event and win a regional.”

Rose, I definitely believe you will commentate one of the big 3 majors very soon. You are a bright star that will shine brightly very soon. Keep at it and it shall come. Good luck to you!

Next up is:

Emily Ofelia Serrato a.k.a. Toki Meki Emily, is definitely a woman with a heart of gold. Within’ the six years she’s been in the FGC, Emily is mostly a cosplayer, but she also considers herself a dedicated disability advocate in esports/ the gaming industry. Although she mostly plays Tekken, she’ll definitely make the switch to TEKKEN 8 whenever it releases. She feels the same about Street Fighter V and Street Fighter 6 (when it releases this Summer).

The twenty-nine year old has made quite a few achievements in the FGC, but she often downplays her achievements because she doesn’t like to brag (which I feel is something she should learn to do more often).

“I got to be a video game consultant that helped develop the character design and backstory of a character named Chive in a game called, “Button City,” she began. “The character is loosely based on me. It was a great experience that I’m very proud of!”

Her reputation within’ the FGC has also brought her great recognition and support (as well as great friendships) from various organizations. “I’ve been recognized and interviewed by Capcom Japan in 2019 as my passion for cosplay caught the attention of individuals on the team. I hung on to their business cards to remember that moment.”

As a disability advocate, her future goals in the FGC are, “…to continue to push for disability awareness and inclusion throughout the community through education.” She continues, “I want to continue to educate esports organizations, support other disabled gamers and I want to compete more, as well as search for opportunities for myself as well as other disabled people in the scene. People need to learn and understand that disabilities are not limitation. Accommodations are key and not something just for “the disabled.” Everyone needs help.”

Emily, your passion to advocate for disability and to educate are truly inspiring. It brings tears to my eyes whenever you talk about your story and why you advocate. You are the representative that many of the people with disabilities in this community need, let alone want. I hope you continue to advocate and never change that vibrant personality of yours!

That is all for this week! If you’d like to be featured in a Ladies Night! Newsletter, make sure to follow the Ladies Night! Twitter and dm us! Or if you don’t prefer social media, contact me via email!

Be ready for the next round,
